How Attar Market in India is growing & Its Global Demand

Kannauj, situated in Uttar Pradesh, India, is renowned for its globally acclaimed production of perfumes, particularly attar and sandalwood-based organic essential oils. With a rich history, the town served as a capital during Emperor Harshavardhan's time, known for his benevolence and sacrifice.

The country's fragrance and flavour industry is estimated to be worth ₹10,000 crore annually, and is overseen by the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises. Fragrances and essential oils, including attar, make up half of this. Globally, India commands 10 per cent of the fragrance and flavour market.

In the past decade, the industry faced challenges, prompting the announcement of the ambitious International Perfume Park by former Chief Minister Subrat Pathak of the BJP government. Despite the inauguration before the UP assembly elections, the project encountered financial difficulties a year later.

Recent statistics, however, indicate positive developments for attar traders in Kannauj, offering a glimmer of hope for the industry. The traditional art of crafting attar and organic oils has proven resilient, with fragrances like jasmine oils, sandalwood, and rose water from India being sought after by luxury perfumeries worldwide.

Despite limited support from state and central governments, media attention has played a crucial role in the industry's recent success. Kannauj's Mitti Attar, with its unique rain-like fragrance, gained recognition and media coverage last year. The industry also benefited from global awareness through features on programs like the "Yeh Mera India" show on HistoryTV18.

Additionally, the government, has announced the establishment of the "International Perfume Museum," garnering attention from global investors and contributing to the industry's positive momentum.
